Once you have determined the search area, select the most appropriate search method.

If visibility is limited, ensure that search patterns overlap to avoid missing any areas.

Common search methods include the following:

U-Shaped Search and Compass Search

Use a compass to maintain direction.
Change direction by 90 degrees at each turn.
Then continue the pattern while ensuring that visual fields overlap.

U-Shaped Search

Compass Search

Circular Search

Establish a fixed center point and conduct the search in a circular pattern using a compass and rope.

After completing one full circle and returning to the starting position, extend the rope by half the visibility distance to ensure overlap, then complete another circle.

Continue extending the rope with each rotation until the entire area from the center point to the full rope length has been searched.

Because this method uses a rope, it may not be suitable on uneven or obstructed sea floors.

Circular Search
Ensure that the outer diver maintains compass direction and completes each full circle accurately.
