Observing marine life

Watching marine life underwater is one of the most enjoyable parts of diving.

The easiest way to observe fish up close is to stay calm, move slowly, and maintain good buoyancy control.

In many cases, fish may come closer when they are curious about you.

Do not feed fish unless your instructor specifically instructs you to do so and it is permitted at the dive site.

Never bring human food underwater to feed marine life.

How to observe marine life safely

Many fish can be found around rocks, reefs, and other underwater structures.

Some fish also live on sandy bottoms and along the edges where sand meets rocks or reefs.

Look carefully and patiently—you may discover well-camouflaged animals hiding in the sand.

Do not touch or chase marine life. Move slowly and keep a respectful distance.

Be careful around rocks and reefs, as some animals have sharp spines or may be poisonous.

Also, do not approach large octopuses or other large animals. They are strong and may grab equipment such as your regulator.

Follow your instructor’s guidance and stay within safe areas so you can enjoy the dive with confidence.
