■How to Read a Compass Bearing

You read a compass bearing directly from your compass.
A bearing is the number on the bezel that shows your direction of travel.

Hold the compass level and point the lubber line in the direction you want to go.
Align the north end of the magnetic needle between the index marks.
The number at the lubber line is your compass bearing.

The figures below show examples of compass bearings when traveling in different directions.
Remember: Keep the compass level and maintain proper alignment while you swim.
