These injuries can cause severe bleeding. Immediate bleeding control is the priority.
- Apply firm, direct pressure to the wound using a clean cloth or bandage.
- If bleeding is heavy and does not stop, apply additional dressings and continue firm pressure.
- If necessary and trained to do so, use a tourniquet for life-threatening limb bleeding.
- If an object (such as a needlefish beak) is embedded in the wound, DO NOT remove it. Stabilize the object in place and seek emergency medical care immediately.
- Lay the injured person down, keep them warm, and monitor for signs of shock.
- Call emergency medical services as soon as possible.
