■Emergency Procedures

If your primary light fails, switch immediately to your backup light. Do not continue the dive using only a backup light. Signal your buddy or team and begin a controlled exit. The entire team should end the dive together.

If you lose sight of your buddy or team, briefly turn off your light. This allows you to look for other light signals more easily. Scan the seabed, mid-water, and surface area for your buddy’s light or chemical marker lights.

If you still cannot locate them, turn your light back on and illuminate a wide area. In good visibility, your light beam may reach the surface. Check not only the bottom, but also the mid-water column and surface area. Your buddy may notice your light and respond.

If contact is not re-established, follow your pre-arranged lost-buddy emergency procedure and exit the dive safely.

Turning off your light briefly helps you detect other divers’ lights
