Nitrogen absorbed under pressure can affect the central nervous system at depth. The effects are often compared to alcohol intoxication and may become noticeable around 30 meters (100 feet) or deeper, depending on the individual.

Improper behavior before, during, or after a dive may increase susceptibility to nitrogen narcosis.

Follow the guidelines below to reduce the risk of nitrogen narcosis:

• Avoid excessive alcohol consumption before diving.

• Do not use recreational drugs, and consult a physician regarding prescription medications.

• Descend slowly and in a controlled manner.

• In low visibility or night conditions, consider diving shallower depths.

• When planning dives deeper than 30 meters (100 feet), dive within your certification limits and with appropriate supervision.

• Gain experience gradually and maintain calm, controlled breathing.
