There are two primary methods of underwater navigation.

The first method uses a compass and is known as compass navigation.

When using a compass, you must focus on your instrument, which may reduce your ability to fully observe and enjoy the surrounding environment.

The second method is natural navigation. This technique uses natural features such as reef formations, bottom contours, sunlight direction, sand patterns, or marine life as reference points.

Natural navigation allows you to stay aware of your surroundings while enjoying the underwater environment.

The most effective approach is to rely primarily on natural navigation and use compass navigation as a backup or confirmation tool.

However, in conditions of extremely limited visibility, natural navigation may not be reliable. In such situations, use your compass and follow safe diving practices.
