■ Names of Compass Parts

■ How to Use a Compass

1

Look toward the direction you intend to travel.

2

Point the lubber line in the direction you want to go.

3

Hold the compass level (horizontal to the water surface) and position it at chest level along the centerline of your body.

4

Rotate the bezel so that the magnetic needle (north) is aligned between the index marks.

5

Keep the magnetic needle aligned between the index marks and swim straight while following the lubber line.

6

If you focus only on the compass, currents may push you off course. When swimming toward your objective, do not rely solely on the compass.

Instead, identify a reference object in the direction of travel (such as a rock or coral) and swim toward that point while periodically checking your compass.

Once you identify a landmark in the correct direction, swim toward it without continuously staring at the compass.
