● Sunlight

The direction of sunlight can help you determine your orientation. By observing the position of the sun at the surface, you can estimate your direction of travel underwater.

At greater depths, sunlight penetration decreases and overall brightness becomes lower.

● Sound

Underwater sounds can provide useful clues. You may hear the noise of a boat’s propeller or the sound of rocks moving due to wave action.

● Currents and Tides

Water movement is often stronger in shallower areas due to wave action.

If you swim against the current during the outbound portion of your dive, you can return more easily by swimming with the current.

However, tidal currents change direction and strength over time. When the tide turns (slack water), the direction of flow will reverse. Always monitor current conditions carefully.
