■Class Control
During training, determine the distance and positioning between the instructor and students to maintain class control and ensure safe diving for all participants.
Sunlight: When the sun is low and glare is strong, position students so they are not facing directly into the sun.
Depth: When stopping in an area where the depth gradually increases, the instructor should position themselves on the deeper side and students on the shallower side. Students should stand in water shallow enough that the weight of the scuba gear does not strain their shoulders (approximately chest-deep water).
Wind Direction: The instructor should position themselves upwind so that instructions can be heard clearly by students.
Visibility: To ensure that instructions underwater are clearly communicated, the instructor should always maintain eye contact with students. All students should be within the instructor’s field of vision, and at the same time, the instructor should be visible to the students. In open water training, fin movement can easily stir up sediment and reduce visibility, so move to a different location if necessary while conducting instruction.
■Communication Techniques
Master communication techniques to ensure safe and enjoyable training.
① Speak calmly and slowly.
② Repeat important points.
③ Pause appropriately to give students time to think.
④ Speak with expressive facial expressions and a relaxed demeanor.
⑤ Speak from a position where everyone can see you.
⑥ Maintain proper posture and attire to avoid giving a careless impression.
⑦ When teaching outdoors or facing away from students, speak loudly enough to be heard clearly.
⑧ When using complex terms, first provide short and clear definitions.
⑨ Minimize filler words such as “uh,” “um,” or “er.”
⑩ Use a conversational style as if speaking directly to students.
⑪ Actively use non-verbal communication such as hand signals and gestures.
⑫ The first habits students acquire—consideration for nature and a safety mindset—are essential for comfortable and safe diving. Instill these habits effectively.
⑬ For courses conducted over two or more days, begin with a review of the previous session.
Review helps establish a common foundation between students and the instructor.
