■ Buoyancy Problems at the Surface
The most important action in preventing difficulties at the surface is to establish and maintain positive buoyancy.
If your BCD malfunctions and you are unable to inflate it at the surface, remain calm and breathe normally through your regulator or alternate air source while swimming toward the boat or shore.
If your air supply is unavailable, immediately establish buoyancy by releasing your weights. Once positively buoyant, continue swimming using a snorkel if appropriate and exit the water safely.
When swimming with a snorkel, keep your body in a horizontal position to reduce drag and conserve energy.
Ensure the snorkel remains above the surface by maintaining proper head position and awareness of the waterline.
Regular practice of surface swimming techniques will help you remain calm and efficient, even in the event of BCD malfunction.
