Tidal Currents

Current strength often varies with depth. In many locations, surface currents are stronger, while currents closer to the bottom are weaker.

Current Layers

■ Layered Currents

In some conditions, the current near the surface flows in a different direction than the current near the bottom.

Descend promptly to the planned depth and stay close to your dive leader to avoid separation from the team.

■ Vertical Currents (Upwellings and Downwellings)

In areas where the seafloor topography changes significantly—such as around large rocks or reef structures—upwellings and downwellings may occur.

Maintain proper buoyancy control and respond calmly and quickly to changes in current conditions.
