You can also don your scuba unit at the surface using the following method.

Hold your snorkel (if used) and add air to the BCD so the scuba unit floats at the surface.

Free the hoses from the BCD so they do not twist or tangle.

Straddle the cylinder from behind (sit on the tank). Adjust BCD inflation so the waterline is around your neck.
If you are floating too low (water above the neck), you may feel unstable—release a small amount of air from the BCD to regain control.

Insert your hands/wrists through the shoulder straps.

Swing both arms up and through, then settle the BCD onto your shoulders.

Fasten the buckle/waist strap and secure the hoses in their retainers.

Inflate the BCD as needed to establish comfortable positive buoyancy at the surface.
